In a remarkable step that reflects Sardar Group’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the strengthening of cultural ties between Iraq and Japan, the Komatsu team from Sardar Group planted two Japanese “Yoko Sakura” trees on February 1, 2025, at the Japanese Town in Baghdad, as part of Sardar Group’s dedication to introducing Japanese culture to Iraq and enriching the city’s beauty. On February 5, Sardar Group planted additional Sakura trees at the American University of Iraq – Baghdad, in the presence of Mr. Sardar Al Bebany, Chairman and CEO of Sardar Group and President of Toyota Iraq; representatives from the Japanese Embassy; representatives from Toyota Iraq; Dr. Michael Mulnix, President of the American University of Iraq – Baghdad; and several university students. Sardar Group continues to expand its environmental initiatives to include planting activities in both Baghdad and Erbil.
Japanese Sakura trees are a symbol of beauty and renewal, with their pink blossoms adding a joyful touch to nature. Sardar Group began planting these trees in Iraq in 2015 and has so far planted around 2,000 trees across the country. This initiative contributes to improving air quality and promoting environmental harmony, aligning with Sardar Group’s vision of preserving natural resources. Through this project, we also aim to promote a culture of environmental care and encourage communities to actively participate in protecting nature.
During the event, Mr. Sardar Al Bebany said: “Sardar Group continues to work towards achieving its vision of improving the environment and enhancing biodiversity in Iraq. This initiative is not just a step forward, but part of our ongoing commitment to expanding green spaces across the country, contributing to the improvement of quality of life in Iraqi cities. By planting Japanese Sakura trees, we aim to enrich our urban environment, making it more beautiful and harmonious — a reflection of our deep commitment to preserving natural landscapes for generations to come.”
For his part, Dr. Michael Mulnix, President of the American University of Iraq, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Sardar Group to our campus, where they have added exceptional beauty and made it more environmentally friendly. We thank Sardar Group for this wonderful initiative, and today we are here to plant Sakura trees in celebration of their commitment to donating dozens of additional trees every year to expand the greenery on campus. These trees will continue to enhance the beauty of our university for decades to come.”
In conclusion, this initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening cultural and environmental cooperation between Iraq and Japan. It demonstrates Sardar Group’s steadfast commitment to creating a healthy and sustainable environment in Iraq. These efforts also contribute to spreading a culture of environmental care and developing green spaces that reflect a deep cultural and environmental heritage shared between the two countries, reaffirming its pioneering role in this field.
